Intertextuality: the interconnection between similar or related works of film that reflect and influence an audience's interpretation of the film.

Types of Intertextuality:

  1. Obligatory Intertextuality: When the writer deliberately invokes a comparison or association between two or more texts.

  2. Optional Intertextuality: It is possible, but not essential, intertextual relationship that if recognized, the connection will slightly shift the understanding of the text.

  3. Accidental Intertextuality: When readers often connect a text with another text with another text, cultural practice or personal experience, without there being any tangible anchorpoint within the original text.

Examples:

-Row 1: This is an example between ET and Stranger Things. This is obligatory intertextuality because it was an obvious parallel between them because in both scenes, they both put on a blonde wig to try to "hid" that they are abnormal.

-Row 2: This is another example of obligatory intertextuality. The Thank U, Next music video was full of parallels, and this specific one is the Christmas dance scene in Mean Girls. The set, costumes, and dancing is all the same.

-Row 3: This is optional intertextuality. It is comparing Shrek and Disney princesses. The girls in Shrek are posing as the princesses, as well as the colors, but it shows that they are trying to act like princesses, but they are nothing like them when you watch the movie.
