Discuss the issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences by international or global institutions

All media companies try to target as many people as possible, and their end goal is almost always going international. There are two types of media companies- conglomerate and independent. Conglomerate companies are widespread and are usually known in all households. Independent companies are small, and target and focus on a specific type of media.

An example of a conglomerate company is Disney. Disney has the means, unlike independent companies, to produce many types of media. They have movies, a television channel, theme parks, and a streaming service. They have been around for so long that even adults watch it because they want to feel nostalgia. Disney doesn’t have to advertise as much because they are already known, but when they do it is not a big deal. They have different platforms and the money to advertise new films coming out as well as hold big premieres with many celebrities. Their content attracts all people around the world. An example of an independent company is Aardman Animations. It is based in the UK and is mainly animation. They are a small company and aren’t as widespread. They are catered to a UK audience and for children. They don’t have the money to advertise like a big company, so it is limited.

A disadvantage to conglomerate companies is that they can take over everything and umbrella over independent companies. They restrict the media to a certain type, and many people aren’t exposed to different things. They have so many resources, so they essentially create the culture and only restrict what their image is. Also, independent companies aren’t able to research overseas advertising. They don’t know how to successfully advertise because they don’t have the means or time to do it. They need all the people they can get to improve their company first. Also, independent companies are forced out of the business because they can’t afford to fight the bigger companies.

Independent media companies bring in more culture and different issues to light, which is important. They are just stuck because of the endless cycle of conglomerate companies. They will always be at a disadvantage.
