Issues raised by media ownership and funding in contemporary media practice

When it comes to media, marketing is a very important aspect to promote the film or show to make money. But, in order to make the actual film or show, it needed to be funded. They are funded by media corporations, which come with issues surrounding it.

When media corporations like Disney fund movies, they expect the movie to adhere to their views. The media cannot have anything negative about or paint the company in a bad light, anything that could backfire. This restricts the directors and writers, making them change their project to make these media companies happy. These companies buy out smaller companies, dictate what goes on screen, limit creativity, and confine diversity. If the majority of movies are owned by a few companies, there’s not many options for the audience. Audiences are restricted to watch media from the same sponsors who want a certain image to be out of them. These corporations result in the lack of creativity and they all start to blend together.

Nowadays, marketing is everything and in order to do that, a large amount of money needs to be dedicated to that. Realistically, only big corporations can afford this compared to independent film makers. This can also limit the amount of successful independent projects out there. A smaller company wouldn’t be able to do that. Along with not being able to afford it, big companies restrict content and in the event of sequels, they aren’t as popular because their creativity is limited. The writers are trying to please their funders, and that means putting in any political and social opinions as well as inserting advertisements.

These corporations control the content of the media which limits creativity and diversity. In hindsight, big media corporations spending a lot of money for media is a good thing so many people can see a good quality project. However, looking into it, there are many issues surrounding it.
