Mise en Scene 5 Essential Elements

  1. Setting: It is an essential element to Mise en Scene because the setting can show parts of the character to the audience. If they are in a messy room, their mind is all over the place. Characters are in places for a reason, so the setting can peer into their mind. It also can add to the story. It can be shown that the story is set in New York or in a bedroom and adds to it.

  2. Decor: Colors of decorations can express emotions. Certain colors such as the dark red of fresh blood can add to the horror of the movie or blue walls can add to the sadness of it.

  3. Lighting: This is everything in movies, especially horror movies. Lighting helps direct the audience's attention to a focal point, which might help walk through the story to make the audience realize what is happening at a certain point. It helps the story go along.

  4. Depth of Space: This can also help focus the audience’s attention on a certain factor. It can be from the character’s point of view or someone else's. Intentional distance can also symbolize many things such as reflection or hardships.

  5. Costumes and Makeup: This can tell a lot about the character. The character can wear their personality- or not. It helps the audience start assessing who they are the first time they are seen and it also helps the story make sense. They can also help blend the characters into the scene, or even make them stand out. Makeup is also an important factor. Do you want them to look tired? Crazy like the Joker? Or a normal person who has a secret? There is so much you can express with costumes and makeup.
